The purpose of this document is to introduce users to myUSF’s Search LX module.
[edit] Prerequisites
The document was designed for first time users of myUSF’s Search LX Module. This document assumes the user has basic computer knowledge and internet skills (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari).
[edit] What is Search LX
The Search LX module allows users to perform a search in myUSF or specific areas of myUSF. Searches can be quite broad or very specific depending on the criteria entered. It is a powerful tool that enables full text searching of all content in Blackboard. With Search myUSF, users can easily locate documents, announcements, calendar items and other types of content. Search myUSF provides quick access to the following types of content:
- Course Content
- Uploaded Files
- Word Files
- PDF files
- Text Files
- HTML Files
- Multimedia Files
- Audio
- Video
- Staff Information
- Announcements
- Calendar Entries
[edit] Adding the Search LX to myUSF
To add Search LX, click on the
button found at the top right of the Welcome Page. A new page will load allowing you to select the Modules you wish to add. Activate the Search LX module by selecting the box
next to it.
When you are finished setting all the preferences, scroll down the second (and last) section to submit your content. If you are not satisfied you can cancel and start over again.
[edit] Using the Search LX module
The Search LX module now appears on the Welcome Page.
Type in the text you wish to search for in the “Search for” textbox. The List Box allows you to search in specific areas of myUSF. This option allows you to search all of myUSF, all courses, a specific course, all organizations, a specific organization, or the web through Google. Once all search criteria are set, select the
button to begin the search.
[edit] Search Results
The results of the search will appear in a page similar to the following.
The pages with the closest match to your search criteria will be listed at the top. All search results will have a format similar to the following.
The name of the page will be listed as a link at the top. Next, a score will be listed. The higher the percentage, the closer the page matched your search criteria. A short summary of the page will be listed next. Finally, the type of file, the location of the file, and the date the file was last changed are shown, respectively. At the top of the Search Results Page you will see the following Search Toolbar.
This gives you the option of beginning a new search by entering the desired text in the “Search for” area. Recent searches are also listed. Clicking on one of the recent search links will perform a search on the word selected. Finally, the Search Toolbar allows you to perform an Advanced Search. At the bottom of the Search Results Page you will see the following.
This shows the total results and allows you to proceed to the following pages of search matches. Click on the page number or the “Next” button to view more search results.
[edit] Advanced Search
The Advanced Search Page allows you to search using advanced options.
[edit] Keywords Selection
The option “all these words” searches for an content that contains all of the text typed in the textbox, however in no specific order. The next option, “this exact phrase” searches the content for the exact phrase and order the text is submitted in. The “some of these words” searches for any of the words submitted to the search. Finally, the “none of these words” excludes content containing these words from the search.

Select the type of files and the Sections you wish to search in. To select all the options, click on the “Check All” link found at the bottom of the section. To unselect all the options, click on the “Clear All” link.

Select the Courses you wish to search in. To select all the options, click on the “Check All” link found at the bottom of the section. To unselect all the options, click on the “Clear All” link.
[edit] Organizations Section
Select the Organizations you wish to search in. To select all the options, click on the “Check All” link found at the bottom of the section. To unselect all the options, click on the “Clear All” link.
